7:43 am
rick perry spent the week in california trying to woo california businesses to relocate in texas. but was the trip a gimmick or is texas the california of the future? larry, thank you for joining us. what's that about? honestly -- >> you mean you don't believe it? >> well, i like texas for sure, but it for him to say that it's so much worlds better. >> let's first give him his due. the stated purpose for his visit
7:44 am
was to invite california businesses to come out to a friendlier place. and he has a point. texas has no income tax, which is tantamount to a pay raise for thin who moves there. but there's more to the texas story. now let's get to the tea leaves. for example, the average household income in texas is 20% less than california. and as far as promising just, well, texas is tied with mississippi for having the highest percentage of minimum wage jobs in the nation, so when you talk about jobs, there's jobs and there's jobs. so the fact is that when you talk about locating or relocating businesses to texas, relocations are extremely rare. and for that matter, just about any other state. businesses just don't up and leave that easily. >> there's no it is expensive to
7:45 am
do business in california. >> the cost of doing business is only part of the cost of doing business. think about this. california has a unique set of factors. unique set of factors that make this a special place. especially for technology which is what perry was most anxious to. so we have access to massive amounts of venture capital, highly skilled workforce and an innovative culture. that's a supply chain if we can use that context of sorts that is distinctive in this area and not easily replicated elsewhere in the country or for the world for that matter. so that really contributes more than just dollars and cents. >> one thought was perhaps ceos saying i'm not going to texas, i'll send my minimum wage jobs to texas and the headquarters stay here. who knows, right? so if businesses are not likely
7:46 am
then to move just because the governor visits california, why did he come here? is it our atm machine again? >> that's where the speculation comes in. the most likely reason, yeah, for perry's presence on the 2016 presidential election. california con tlib butted about 10% of the funds to fellow republican mitt romney last year. at the moment, the 2016 republican nomination is simply wide open. so perry had a taste of this process last year, remember that, of course he couldn't remember three things. that's another story. nonetheless, he'll be a lot more prepared the next time around and he'll need funding which may be the real reason he came to california. but all of this underscores the fact that elections are on going events here and elsewhere. as soon as one ends, boom, another begins and that's exactly what we're doing. we're all looking to the
